I followed the 'orphan to soldier' path that many others have. I found myself embroiled in the Vietnam mess - on the wrong side of the POW trauma. I lost some fingers and damaged a hand over there. Coming home to an unwelcoming nation, I stayed low and out of sight - still avoiding speaking about those times with anyone.

March 18, 2025 – 'Jin and Donovan's Path' posts today. The subtitle is 'Where Fate, Faith, and a Mysterious Past Intertwine.'
Although it is in NonHuman Stories, it seems real right up to the moment it isn't.

March 13, 2025 – 'Widow Willow Minor and James' posted this morning. It is a tale of a teacher who befriends an orphan and grows into something more beneath an apple tree in a rural town of gossips and humorous takes on village life.

March 9, 2025 – A new story will appear today in the Reluctance category: JoJo Thought He Was a Loner. It is mainly tongue-in-cheek satire inspired by Emily Miller's work; however, it builds to a twist in the end as Emily's story did. Hope you read it and give me your thoughts in the comments.

February 27, 2025 - The month has disappeared! Two stories are out: 'The Orphan' subtitled: 'Never Meant to Be.' and 'Donovan Milford's Timely Departure' subtitled 'The Last Note in an Old Man’s Swan Song.' The Orphan story is autobiographical for the most part. It's a confession of sorts. The Donovan story is a 750-word story of an elderly man coming to grips with the end of his time. I am working on an expanded version of the short one. The comments are nice– for both stories. I thank each of you for that.

December 6, 2024–I've written a cowboy story that will be posted on 12-07-24. It's called A Calico Girl's Revenge. A young woman is ravaged in it—that's the sex part. It's not overly graphic, just enough to paint the concept. From there, it's all about painting a Zane Gray style of flourishing descriptive style of the West. I believe it may be my last Western story.

November 10, 2024—I’ve been writing less frequently, and, truth be told, my words may become even scarcer going forward. My most recent hospital stay brought difficult news, including a transition to home hospice care. It’s a lot to take in, and while it’s not the future I hoped for, I’m facing it as best as I can. Aging and the wear of time are catching up with me, and the medications don’t make it any easier.

I’m unsure if I’ll finish my goal of writing a story in each category. Maybe there’s still time for one more—or, if lucky, one story at a time. Your kind words about my work so far have meant more to me than I can say. Knowing that my stories have been appreciated has been a bright spot.

With gratitude,
Donald Mallord
Still here, and still writing.

August 4, 2024—'Savory Lies and Deadly Spies' was recently posted. It is my contribution to the 2024 Mike Hammer Tribute. It follows the noir elements of the 40s and 50s, but this time, the story is set in modern times. It scores a respectable 4.6 at the moment. My new detective is in trouble again with his secretary, his ex-wife, the law, and the mysterious Em, who comes into his life. I would appreciate your review and score as well if you are into Mickey Spillane-type detective novels.

July 18, 2024 - The 'What I Wrote and Why I Wrote It Event story' WIWAW - Rescuing a Snow Angel has been posted. It is subtitled: A Veteran Finds His Way Back. It provides the behind-the-scenes content of why I wrote the story and how it ties to some of my real-life experiences. The score is a very respectable 4.94 with 16 votes. Of course, that may not hold as more votes tend to find a still respectable plateau. I would appreciate your looking at the WIWAW and the story if you haven't read it.

July 5, 2024 – 'Max Dates Julie Teeger' posted this morning. It is a fan/fic story about a fictional character from the old Monk television series. Julie is caught up in becoming a young, independent woman and preserving herself for marriage. This story is her solution to an admiring young man on a first date.

June 11, 2024 – 'Grammie's Secret Letters' posted in transcripts and letters. It's the tale of paternal twins finding their grandmother's old computer, and the erotic tales it contains set them on an incestual exploration of those writings while home during the summer. Readers have rated it Hot so far. I'm encouraged by that, even though it is in a category with few readers. It's more about their engagement with one another than the old electronic copies of their grandmother and her sailor lover in the late 1980's. They are steaming, to put it mildly. Feel free to drop me a line if the category is something you read. I'd be curious if you find the dialogue appropriate for teens.

On July 31st, Lit will post stories about the Mike Hammer theme event. I'm looking forward to those postings in a day or sooner. I'll update that here as we approach that timeline.
