We both know the rhythm
but don’t know the rhyme
off-season beach town
running out of time,
Met in the grocery store
what was I to do?
when she answered
“I’ll drink one beer with you”,

So, we’re at the Anchor Bar
a view out to the ocean
crowds have all gone home
no need for sun-tan lotion,
Waiting for the tide to turn
it happens twice a day
perhaps in search of something
appropriate to say,

A winter breeze will soon
be blowing down the coast
probably time to hit the road
drink a final toast,
She asks where am I going
I tell her I don’t know
this, of course, is where she asks
“perhaps I could go…”,

But that is not what happens
that’s not what we do
drive into the sunset
in search of something new,
Instead we sit there drinking
now much too drunk to drive
wearing our beer goggles
only half alive,

The bungalow is chilly
morning surf is rolling in
small craft advisory
here I go again,
Life is full of mystery
what was, and what might be
I drink my cup of coffee
and look out towards the sea,
