So often I think to contact someone
A stranger to my eyes
Who writes exquisite poetry
Words that tantalise
Awaken yearnings in my soul
By words that I relate to
Hope there may be things to share
A friendship that might be true
But past events have conditioned me
Rejection can cause such hurt
Especially when there's no reply
Not even something curt
A mixture of scarred and scared
Really makes no sense
But memories flood back
Of things in the past tense
When hearts were safe on sleeves
A kinder time for sure
But now I lack self confidence
For which there is no cure
So forgive my lack of feedback
Even when it’s deserved
It’s easier to stay in the shadows
And behave much more reserved
One day my nerve might resurface
And words will flow sublime
But I can only sit and wait
For the return of a safer time
